Instagram Unveils Edits, a New Video Editing App
In a bold move amid ongoing shifts in the social media landscape, Instagram has launched a new video editing app called Edits. This release comes on the same day TikTok and CapCut were legally banned in the U.S., creating significant ripple effects within the video editing and social media sectors.
Edits App: The Ultimate Video Editing Tool for Creators
“With everything happening in the world today, our goal is to provide the most advanced creative tools,” said Instagram head Adam Mosseri in his announcement. The Edits app promises to be a game changer for video creators who rely on their mobile devices to produce content.
The timing of the announcement is notable, as TikTok and CapCut, both owned by ByteDance, were officially banned in the U.S. on Sunday due to national security concerns. As TikTok scrambled to find a solution, Instagram took the opportunity to unveil Edits, a new video editing platform designed for easy and intuitive use.
When Will Edits Be Available?
Currently, Edits is available for free pre-order in the Apple App Store, with an official release expected in February or March 2025. The app will also be made available for download in the Google Play Store shortly after its initial launch.

Features of Edits: What Can Users Expect?
The Edits app will allow creators to produce high-quality videos up to 10 minutes long in 1080p resolution. Users can add text, sound effects, voiceovers, filters, and stickers, making the platform highly versatile. Notably, Edits will feature AI-powered animation and generative captions to enhance video content.
“Edits isn’t designed for desktop users or those seeking pre-built templates; it’s made for creators who use their smartphones to produce short-form content,” Mosseri explained.
The first version of the Edits app is expected to be a “work in progress,” with regular updates to improve its features and performance over time.
Edits vs. CapCut: What’s the Difference?
While Edits and CapCut may seem similar at first glance, they are distinct video editing platforms. Edits is owned by Instagram, a subsidiary of Meta, while CapCut is owned by ByteDance. As of now, CapCut is unavailable in the U.S. due to the legal ban on ByteDance-owned platforms.
Why Was CapCut Banned in the U.S.?
CapCut, like TikTok, was caught up in recent U.S. legislation aimed at addressing national security concerns. The ban on ByteDance-owned apps, including TikTok and CapCut, stems from fears that user data could be shared with the Chinese government. As part of the ongoing legal battle, President Joe Biden signed a law requiring ByteDance to divest its U.S.-based platforms by January 19, 2025.
While TikTok has managed to restore service in the U.S. following support from President-elect Donald Trump, CapCut and other ByteDance-owned apps remain inaccessible in the country.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Video Editing Apps
With the release of Edits, Instagram is positioning itself as a strong player in the video editing space, offering creators powerful tools to enhance their content. As TikTok’s future remains uncertain in the U.S., Edits is poised to attract video creators looking for an alternative, offering a seamless experience for Instagram users and beyond.
